Composer's notes:

I was approached by the RNCM-based Northern Reeds to write them a piece. Since the reed quintet is a relatively new ensemble, there is not much established repertoire. The repertoire that does exist for this ensemble tends to be light music, often quite minimalist and using the bass clarinet as a ‘riffing’ instrument. Listening to recordings made by the established reed quintet: The Calefax Quintet, I noticed that they played a lot of J.S.Bach arrangements. This encouraged me to write a completely different sort of reed quintet than the existing repertoire that I had come across. I felt that there was potential in this ensemble for diverse individual timbres but an overall homogeneous sound, in a densely contrapuntal work.
