Composer's notes:

These short pieces derive much of their material from a series of recordings of the Melodious Warbler. I began by slowing down the original song, which is far too complex for a human ear to discern in detail, and picking out individual motifs, melodies and rhythms which I found particularly fascinating. Each musical moment went on to form one of the four little pieces. The song of this species is enormously varied, because it mimics all the other birds it encounters, making it something of a Stravinsky of the bird world. Indeed it was Stravinsky's and Prokofiev's tiny forms of the 1910s which were the initial impulse to write these miniatures. So, like the Melodious Warbler, my music is formed out of imitation.
